Electric vehicle sales in Ireland reached a significant milestone in January

Electric vehicle sales in Ireland reached a significant milestone in January, surpassing both petrol and diesel car registrations for the first time. Data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry showed that 7,319 electric cars were registered during the month, representing a 48–49% increase compared to January 2025.

Electric vehicles accounted for roughly one in five new cars sold, placing them ahead of petrol and diesel vehicles, though hybrid models still held the largest share of the market.

The rise in EV adoption has been driven by several factors, including government purchase incentives, expanding public charging infrastructure, and a growing range of electric models at more competitive prices. These measures are part of wider EU and national efforts to reduce emissions and move away from internal combustion engines, with policies such as the planned EU ban on new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035.

Despite the rapid growth, experts note that continued investment and policy support will be necessary to maintain momentum and ensure that the transition to electric mobility meets long-term climate goals.
