EU approves new technical requirements for EV chargers
The Council of the European Union has approved updated rules for measuring instruments, introducing new requirements for electric vehicle chargers and related technologies. The revised directive aims to support the expansion of charging infrastructure and accelerate the transition to cleaner mobility across Europe.
A key change is the extension of the directive to cover all electric vehicle supply equipment, including charging systems used across different transport sectors. This creates a unified regulatory framework and helps standardise how charging infrastructure is developed and deployed across the EU.
The new rules also address practical issues such as damaged or stolen charging cables. Chargers will need to be designed so that cables can be replaced more easily without affecting performance, reducing maintenance complexity and downtime for operators.
In addition, the directive supports digitalisation and smart metering. Charging systems will be able to display data not only on the device itself but also via vehicles or user devices such as smartphones, improving user experience and flexibility.
Overall, the updated requirements are intended to create common standards across the EU, enabling faster deployment of charging infrastructure and supporting the growth of electric mobility.
