The European Commission has officially opened applications for its new Battery Booster Facility, making up to €1.5 billion available to support electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing across Europe. The initiative represents another major step toward strengthening Europe's clean mobility industry while improving long-term energy independence.

Financed through the EU Innovation Fund, the program offers interest-free loans to battery manufacturers during one of the most challenging stages of production—the transition from pilot manufacturing to full commercial-scale operations. This period often requires significant investment before factories reach stable production volumes.

The funding is available to eligible projects within the European Economic Area that focus on producing battery cells for electric vehicles. Each supported project must represent the company's first commercial-scale EV battery cell factory and be capable of producing at least 10 GWh annually, helping establish a stronger and more competitive European battery supply chain.

As EV adoption continues to grow across Europe, increasing domestic battery production is becoming increasingly important. A stronger regional supply chain can improve manufacturing resilience, reduce dependence on imported battery technologies, and support the expansion of charging infrastructure by enabling a larger fleet of electric vehicles on European roads.
