The report says the EU already produces a significant share of the batteries it needs and remains a net exporter of electric vehicles, indicating that Europe is still competitive in key parts of the EV value chain.
The analysis highlights rising investment in battery cell plants and EV manufacturing across Europe, supported by both European and foreign companies. This growth is helping to strengthen supply chains, create jobs and reduce Europe’s dependence on imported batteries and vehicles.
However, Bruegel notes that further expansion will be needed to meet future demand and climate targets, and that Europe must continue investing to remain competitive against China and other global players.
