Germany is rapidly expanding electric-vehicle charging infrastructure along its highways to support long-distance EV travel and reduce transport emissions. The government and private industry are investing heavily in high-power charging stations located along major autobahns, allowing drivers to quickly recharge during long journeys.
The national strategy includes the installation of thousands of new fast-charging points and large infrastructure funding programs. Germany’s long-term goal is to reach around one million public charging points by 2030, which would support millions of electric vehicles and accelerate the country’s transition to electric mobility.
New infrastructure projects are also focusing on heavy transport. Germany is developing a network of high-power charging stations for electric trucks along federal highways. The planned network could cover approximately 95% of Germany’s highway system, helping decarbonize freight transport and support the growing number of electric trucks entering the market.
At the European level, new regulations aim to ensure that fast-charging stations are installed roughly every 60 kilometers along major transport corridors, creating a reliable charging network for EV drivers traveling across the continent.
