New electric vehicles promise shorter charging stops, but real-world charging speed depends on more than the car’s specifications. The charging station, battery temperature and battery charge level all influence how quickly energy reaches the vehicle.
The BMW iX3 illustrates what the latest technology can achieve. BMW specifies a maximum DC charging power of 400 kW and a charging time of 21 minutes from 10% to 80% under suitable conditions. Its 800-volt architecture supports high-power charging, but these figures do not mean every charging station will deliver the same result.
A charging station’s power rating is only part of the picture. The vehicle must also be able to accept the available power. Connecting a car to a more powerful charger cannot override the car’s charging limits. Charging speed also changes during the session: as the battery approaches full capacity, power generally decreases. This is why the time needed to charge from 10% to 80% is often more useful than the peak power figure alone.
Battery temperature matters too. A cold or excessively hot battery can limit charging performance, even at a powerful DC station. Where supported, battery preconditioning helps prepare the battery for a charging stop. Drivers should follow their vehicle’s instructions to make effective use of this function.
For businesses choosing EV charging equipment, these differences make careful planning essential. When comparing DC charging stations, ask suppliers about their output voltage range, maximum current and available power when several vehicles charge simultaneously. Assess these specifications alongside the site’s electrical capacity and customers’ typical stopping times.
AC charging remains relevant for hotels, workplaces and other locations where vehicles stay for several hours. Its speed also depends on the vehicle’s onboard charger. For example, BMW specifies 11 kW AC charging as standard for the new iX3, with 22 kW available optionally.
Planning charging infrastructure for your business? Start with parking duration, expected demand and available electrical capacity. These factors provide a practical basis for choosing an appropriate combination of AC and DC charging stations.
